✨ Descriptive Notes

📖 Definition

  • Democracy = “Government of the people, by the people, for the people.” — Abraham Lincoln
  • Derived from Greek word “Demokratia”:
    • Demos = People
    • Kratia = Rule/Power

🏛️ Features of Democracy

  1. Elected Rulers – Leaders are chosen through free and fair elections.
  2. One Person, One Vote, One Value – Every adult citizen has equal voting rights.
  3. Freedom – Citizens enjoy freedom of speech, expression, and access to information.
  4. Accountability – The government is responsible and answerable to the people.

🗳️ Types of Democracy

  • Direct Democracy – People directly take decisions. (Ancient Athens)
  • Representative Democracy – People elect representatives who decide on their behalf. (India)

✅ Merits of Democracy

  • Ensures people’s participation.
  • Makes government accountable & transparent.
  • Provides peaceful method of conflict resolution.
  • Promotes dignity, liberty, and equality of citizens.

⚠️ Demerits / Limitations of Democracy

  • Slow decision-making due to consultations.
  • Illiteracy and poverty may reduce effective participation.
  • Corruption and misuse of power weaken democracy.
  • Sometimes popular decisions may be wrong.

🌍 Examples

  • Mexico (2000): End of 71 years of one-party rule → victory for democracy.
  • China: One-party Communist rule, no real choice → not democracy.
  • India: Free and fair elections, multiparty democracy → successful democracy.

📝 Conclusion
